Pierre-146.jpg

On Saturday, Holly and I had business out west river.  While out in that country, we decided to pay a visit to the capitol in Pierre.  While we didn't go in the building, we did explore the park and memorial near by.

Ironically, it always seems to be a place of solitude even though there is probably a little arguing going on inside the walls of that building. The World War II memorial, along with the Vietnam and Korean War memorials serve as a reminder of the sacrifices South Dakotans made to protect the very freedom we enjoy today.

It was a perfect day for some off-the-cuff shooting.  Holly Pierre-137.jpgwas firing away with her usual DSLR, while I was going old-school with my trusty Nikon N-75, shooting on actual C-41 process film.  Even though there was nothing to see there, I frequently found myself looking at the back of the camera, expecting that instant gratitude of seeing a (hopefully) well-composed shot.  Instead, I have to wait for the film to come back from the processor.

There is something to be said for shooting film, though.  With digital, you snap, look, and correct.  You can check your histograms, highlights, even zoom in on details and check for flaws.  But with film, you gotta get it right using only the meter and your eyes.  It's certainly a challenge, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the instant feedback.

One of the challanges we faced during the shoot was a crowd of visitors wandering through the scenery, which forced us to be creative in how we composed our shots. The children screaming scared off the ducks but we still managed to sneak a shot or two.

Pierre-97-copy.jpgI did borrow the DSLR for a minute to snap a some photos for a panorama of the soldiers of the World War II memorial.  We forgot the tripod, so unfortunately, it's not full HDR, but it still turned out pretty nice, I think. It's not quite ready for the world to see yet, but we'll give you a peak when it's done.

After the sun set, we headed back along the winding Highway 34. We think you should always take the backroads any chance you get, you never know what kind of scenery you'll find. We crested a large hill to find a huge orange moon on the horizon. It was a beautiful end to a fun day.
